🌟 Spotlight: "Fancy Nancy" Hosey

A Heart Behind the Mission

Nancy, lovingly known across Amelia Island as "Fancy Nancy" is 70 years young.   Nancy lives with dementia — but she also lives with heart, joy, and a contagious love for music, dancing, and people.

Until recently, Nancy and her devoted caregiver, Connie, could often be seen out and about: shopping downtown, soaking in the sun at the beach, or swaying to live music under the stars. What made Nancy stand out wasn’t just her radiant spirit — it was her t-shirts. Each shirt carried a positive message about dementia, gently letting others know about her condition and inviting connection, not pity.

These small acts of openness had a big impact. Strangers became friends. Conversations became moments of understanding. Dance floors became spaces of celebration.

Nancy’s story is more than touching — it’s foundational. Her courage and visibility helped inspire the creation of Canopy Way of Amelia, a nonprofit dedicated to making life with dementia richer, more supported, and more connected.

“Every time we stepped outside, Nancy brought joy to someone. Even when she couldn’t remember names, she remembered how people made her feel — and she made sure they felt loved in return.”
— Connie, Nancy’s Caregiver & Friend

Nancy reminds us all: dementia may change the way someone interacts with the world, but it should never diminish their place in it.
